Hamilton Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer Named Southern
States Athletic Conference Athletic Trainer of the Year
Sherman Howze, a certified athletic
trainer with Hamilton Sports Medicine was
recently named the National Association
of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Southern
States Athletic Conference Athletic Trainer
of the Year. Sherman is one of 12 athletic
trainers with Hamilton Sports Medicine and
is stationed at Dalton State College.
“Sherman is a big part of our success,”
says Hunter Hageman, Dalton State College
assistant men’s basketball coach. “He
relates well to the players.”
The award recognizes a National Athletic
Trainers’ Association certified athletic
trainer at an NAIA institution who has
distinguished himself or herself as a model
of the profession in personal conduct and
professional allied health service to athletes.
Erik Simpson, assistant athletic director at
Dalton State College, nominated Sherman
for the award. “Sherman has lowered
the cost of our insurance, decreased our
injury-rate percentage, and called for more
stringent drug testing at the NAIA level,”
says Erik.
According to Stephanie Rynas, Hamilton
Sports Medicine manager, Sherman is
humble, hardworking, and positive. “Even
with having the long hours that being a
college athletic trainer requires, Sherman
still volunteers to help other staff members
and is a true team player,” says Stephanie.
“He cares about doing the best job he can
and getting the best results.”
Hamilton Medical Center has provided certified
athletic trainers to local area schools and
surrounding communities for 20 years. There
are currently 12 athletic trainers on Hamilton
Medical Center’s staff providing services to:

• Coahulla Creek High School
• Dalton High School
• Dalton State College
• Lafayette High School
• Murray County High School
• North Murray High School
• Northwest Whitfield High School
• Southeast Whitfield High School
Hamilton Sports Medicine’s athletic trainers
have completed an accredited athletic training
program and are certified by the National
Athletic Trainers’ Association. Hamilton’s
athletic trainers coordinate with orthopedic
surgeons to provide:
• Evaluation and treatment of injuries
• Preparation for games and practices
• Pre-season screenings and physicals
• Biomechanical motion analysis
• Educational workshops for staff, athletes,
and parents
• Special event coverage
• Institution of emergency action plans
• CPR and automated external
defibrillator (AED) training
• Injury risk management
• Baseline/Post-injury concussion
testing and management
Hamilton Sports Medicine
Offers CPR Training To Area
Schools
Hamilton Sports Medicine offers American
Heart Association cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External
Defibrillator (AED) certification training to
the athletic coaching staff at the 10 schools
where Hamilton Medical Center certified
athletic trainers are stationed. This year, 32
coaches were certified through this program.
On-Site Athletic Care at
Southeastern 7 on 7
Hamilton Sports Medicine provided on-site
medical care by certified athletic trainers for
the recent Southeastern 7 on 7, the two-day
Dalton Daily Citizen football camp. Schools
from as far as Kentucky and Florida traveled to
play at the event.
Medical Professionals Provide
Free Sports Physicals and
Cardiac Clearances to Area
Students
Over 1,400 student-athletes from Dalton
State College and local high and middle
schools recently received free sports physicals
and cardiac clearances through a program
organized by Hamilton Sports Medicine.
Volunteers included area physicians, nurse
practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and
other healthcare professionals.

Orthopedic Clinics
Hamilton Sports Medicine partners with local
orthopedic surgeons Mitch Frix, MD, Jim
Lashley, MD, John Norman, Sr., MD, Nick
Reed, MD, and Mike Wilson, MD, to evaluate
injuries each Saturday morning during
football season.
