12 JESUIT PERSPECTIVES • WINTER 2017-18
Jesuit High School hosted a
beautiful Grandparent’s Day on Sun.
Nov. 12, as hundreds of students
and grandparents enjoyed one of the
school’s most cherished annual events.
About 500 grandparents and more
than 250 Jesuit students enjoyed Mass
celebrated by Fr. Angel Rivera-Fals, S.J.,
followed by a reception in the cafeteria
and the Student Commons.
Saint Ignatius Scholars
Jesuit High School recognized the
eight students chosen for the school’s
most prestigious scholarship, the Saint
Ignatius Scholar Program, at a special
Convocation and reception on Sept 27.
Two students in each grade level
are selected to receive the award, which
is worth half the cost of tuition through
high school. The program was founded in
2014, making this the fi rst school year in
which each class is represented.
Students qualify if they score in the
top 2% nationwide on the High School
Placement Test. From that pool of fi nalists,
candidates must submit an essay
and letter of recommendation, and are
evaluated on the basis of character, faith,
service, and need.
With their families in attendance,
the Saint Ignatius Scholars honored
were: seniors Hyoung Kim and Matthew
Tamashiro, juniors Carter Campbell and
Connor Murphy, sophomores Christopher
Browy and Ethan Marquis, and freshmen
Dawson Kiser and Michael Provenza.
Kim spoke at Convocation about the
impact the scholarship, and attending
Jesuit, has made on his life. Tamashiro
then introduced the junior, sophomore,
and freshman Saint Ignatius Scholars.
After Convocation, the scholars and
their families attended a special breakfast
event in Faber Hall. There, principal
Barry Neuburger commended them, and
Kim and Tamashiro were presented with
plaques in recognition of their achievement
as the school’s fi rst Saint Ignatius
Scholars.
