Jesuit High School student artists
were a presence in the Tampa Bay art
scene this fall, winning awards and
high places in top exhibitions.
A remarkable nine of the 35 artists
showcased at the Tampa Museum of
Art’s 2nd Annual Youth Council Student
Exhibition in October-November were
Jesuit students. Their work was selected
from hundreds of submissions for the
prestigious high school show.
Two Tigers earned top awards:
“Sushi” by Diego Perez ’18 won 2nd
Place overall, and “Iguana” by Nick
Vastano ’18 captured the People’s
Choice Award as voted on by patrons
at the event opening.
The other Jesuit students showcased
at TMA were: Bryce Bailey ’18, DeRose
Brutus ’18, Quintin Hoggard ’18, Will
Hoyt ’18, Alex Pena ’18, Trevor Perez ’18,
and Daniel Villavicencio ’18. Click the

Last year, at the inaugural TMA Youth
Council event, Hoggard had captured
Best in Show for his charcoal drawing
“Finding Light,” and he earned another
honor this fall from the Tampa Bay
Lightning. His piece “In the Wood” was
one of just 41 selected from among more
than 500 submissions – including many
from professional artists – for the Lightning’s
prestigious Celebration of the Arts
exhibition, and he was one of three 1st
Prize winners in the 18-under category.
“In the Wood” is a mixture of
drawing, etching, and pyrography, said
Jesuit’s Fine Arts Department Head,
Kevin Ball ’03. Hoggard used what is
essentially an electric pen that produces
an extremely hot tip to create an etch or
a burn mark. It was completed on a oneinch
slice of Basswood, which was used
because of its softness. All of the pieces
selected for the Lightning’s exhibit are on
display at Amalie Arena for the 2017-18
hockey season.
In December, 18 Jesuit artists had
their work put on display at the Diocesan
Pastoral Center in St. Petersburg. Included
were pieces from fi ve sophomores, eight
juniors, and seniors Hoggard, Ethan
Dieck, Diego Perez, Trevor Perez, and
Josh Talbot.
