COASTAL RESTORATION The Environmental Club restored and preserved a local
coastal area Nov. 18, establishing an oyster shell bar along the Alafi a River in
Riverview. Club members Drew Carson ’21, Nolan Forrest ’18, Carson Jeff ords ’21,
Frankie Machado ’21, Nico Machado ’21, Brendan McDonald ’18, Alex Orr ’19, Jaden
Pask ’19, Anthony Ramirez ’18, and Tyler Thomas ’21 shoveled fossilized shell into
hundreds of mesh bags and placed them on the shoreline, creating a series of oyster
bars. Coordinated by Tampa Bay Watch, the project restores lost habitat systems to
the bay and prevents erosion while improving water quality.
CONVOCATION IMPACT Jesuit has been blessed with amazing Convocations
this school year, from students such as Jack Mahoney ’18, Ryan Welsh ’18, and
Matthew Tamashiro ’18; faculty-staff such as Jonathan Barlaan ’07, Brian
Greenfi eld, and Andy Wood ’92; and special guests such as Kevin Brooks, who
took the life of a friend and paralyzed himself from the chest down due to drunk
driving; Brigadier General Tom Draude, who served 31 years in the Marine Corps;
Belmont Abbey College president Dr. Bill Thierfelder; and Jesuit’s 2013 Gavan
Award winner Cameron Ruff ’13.
70 YEARS A JESUIT Fr. Francis Brou, S.J. was honored Dec. 6 at the Hillsborough County
Commission by commissioner Sandra Murman for “humanitarian contributions on the
occasion of his 70th anniversary as a member of the Society of Jesus.” First from 1964-71,
when Fr. Brou initially was assigned to Jesuit, and then from 2006 until today as school
chaplain, Fr. Brou’s impact on Jesuit students has spanned generations. Among those
attending were Michael Azzarelli ’71, Joe Ficarrotta ’65, Hon. Ron Ficarrotta ’76, Ernest
“Cookie” Garcia ’50, Mac Greco ’65, Charlie Robbins ’69, and Will Wellman ’01.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Eight members of the Class of 2018, for
their excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, and character, were
inducted into NHS on Oct. 5 during a special ceremony in the MPR. They
join 82 classmates who were inducted in the spring. The new inductees:
Ethan Dieck, Reid Clark, Daniel Harris, Brett Sandborn, Christian Gonzmart,
Ryan Welsh, Nicholas Vastano, and Noah Kurtz. NHS club president Sam
Sands ’18 presided, and four days later Sands spoke at Convocation about
what it means to be a part of NHS.
MAYOR’S YOUTH CORPS Brothers Christian Jung ‘18 and Andrew Jung ’19
were featured this fall in a video produced by the Mayor Youth Corps of
Tampa. They were interviewed on campus under the Bell Tower,
discussing their service with the Mayor’s Youth Corps as well
as their leadership with Jesuit’s Robotics program. Scan the

SADD REMEMBRANCE Jesuit’s SADD club – Students Against
Destructive Decisions participated in an annual candlelight vigil Dec. 7 in
memory of those killed locally in DUI-related crashes. Thirty two members
of SADD, along with moderators Lauren Maguire and Amy Martin, attended
the MADD Candlelight Vigil at First Baptist Church in Temple Terrace.
For several years SADD has supported the vigil, which is sponsored by
Mothers Against Drunk Driving. In the last six years in Florida, more than
79,000 DUI-related crashes have occurred, killing 2,200 people.
