READ THE STORIES AND POSITIVE
Connie Shepherd: New Knees, New Purpose
Connie Shepherd had both of her knees replaced at
Hamilton Medical Center by John Norman, MD, and she had
physical therapy at Bradley Whiteside Rehabilitation. “I felt
so much better after the knee replacements that if I had a
third knee, I’d have that done too,” jokes Connie.
After her surgery, Connie was pain free. Soon she began to
feel that needed a new purpose. A friend suggested that she
volunteer. Now she volunteers at the hospital two days a
week. Part of her time is spent working with Hamilton’s Joint
Moves program. “I get to talk with people who are preparing
for joint surgery,” says Connie. “I can relate to how they are
feeling and help ease their fears. I really enjoy getting to
serve my community in this way.”
Pam Keeter: Running Through Life
Thirty-one years ago, Pam Keeter was diagnosed with
on the inner lining of the large intestine. This disease causes
Pam some complications, but she doesn’t let it slow her
down. “One day, my sister-in-law called me and said that
she wanted me to run with her. That’s how I got started.
We would run a little and then walk a little until I built up
stamina. Since then we have run 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons,
and full marathons.”
Pam has always enjoyed exercise. “I thank the Lord that I
like to exercise because I like to eat,” says Pam with a smile.
“Exercise helps the entire person–both emotionally and
physically. I could be a lot worse off. I feel blessed that I can
do what I can do.”
GIVE COMPLIMENTS.
When we compliment someone, it makes us look for the good in
others. In doing so, we also start to see the good in ourselves.
SMILE. Even if you don’t feel like it, smile. You will be surprised at how this
simple act can improve your attitude. And the best part is, it’s contagious!
GIVE BACK.
Studies show that volunteering is good
for your health!1 It’s a great way to meet
new friends, increase your physical
activity, and give back to your community.
