“I had been struggling with Type 2 diabetes and my weight for
several years,” says Bert Vaughn. “So, during my appointment,
Dr. Carlton Lancaster suggested that I enroll in the Intensive
Behavior Therapy for Obesity program at Hamilton Diabetes
and Endocrinology Center. I thought about it and decided that
I was just going to jump into this.”
Intensive Behavior Therapy (IBT) is a 6 to 12-month weight
management program. It is covered by Medicare at no cost,
with a diagnosis of obesity. Obesity is diagnosed when a
person has a body mass index of 30 or greater.
“I went to the IBT class and then met one-on-one with a
nutritionist each week for a month and then every other week
and meal planning. I recorded what I ate and she offered
suggestions.”

It’s been six months since Bert started the program and he
has already lost 43 pounds. His A1C levels have gone down
from 7 to 5.5.
glucose levels over the past three months. An A1C level
below 5.7 percent is considered normal. An A1C between
5.7 and 6.4 percent signals prediabetes. Type 2 diabetes is
diagnosed when the A1C is over 6.5 percent.
Bert no longer needs insulin and has started on a non-insulin
injectable to control his diabetes. His weight loss has not
only improved his quality of life, but has also decreased the
cost of his diabetes treatment. “I feel good,” says Bert. “I’m
thankful for the support and guidance of Hamilton Diabetes
and Endocrinology Center and from my wife, Anne.”
