Downsizing & Relocation
REAL ESTATE
DOWNSIZING AND
TRANSITIONING
Our homes are our connection to our past
with memories that have made and shaped
our lives. So, it is no wonder why downsizing
and leaving the family home can be a difficult
time for older adults. For many, this transition
can be not only a deep emotional trigger, but
the enormity of the process can be overwhelming
especially if family support is not local.
See page 54 to learn how a senior move specialist
can help.
Once the decision has been made to downsize
and transition into perhaps an active adult
retirement community or maybe the need for
assisted living, the next step is seeking the
professional help of a realtor to sell the home.
This is especially true for older adults whose
real estate transactions may affect long-term
care planning tax considerations and/or estate
planning considerations.
CHOOSING A REALTOR
Choosing a realtor is an important part of
the downsizing process. An experienced realtor
who understands the market will likely result in
a faster sale. You may want to consider finding
a realtor who specializes in working with
older adults. A Senior Real Estate Specialist® or
SRES®, is a realtor who has received extensive,
specialized training covering topics that are of
special importance to older adults and their
families. Additionally, a significant benefit of
using a SRES® is their ability to connect you
with their network of senior-friendly movers,
attorneys, home inspectors, and other experts
to help you through the transition and moving
process.
