A VIVACIOUS
CULTURE
You may have noticed beautiful paper garlands and flags at your favorite
Mexican restaurant. Papel Picado, or “pecked paper,” is a colored tissue
paper used in traditional Mexican folk art. By chiseling out tiny pieces of
paper, the artisans create beautiful and intricate designs. The vibrant colors
juxtaposed with complex webs of squares, caricatures, or phrases were the
perfect inspiration for our quilt design.
Each block uses satin stitches as an homage to each painstakingly chiseled
space in traditional pecked paper. Quilters will get the opportunity to think
outside the square and channel their inner Frieda Kahlo by putting Fabric
Fiesta designs on bags, shirts, or their custom huipil skirts.
