City Breaks Ground on New Clearwater Gas Campus
The city of Clearwater and Clearwater Gas System
broke ground in February on its new Clearwater
Gas Complex, located at 400 N. Myrtle Ave. in
Clearwater.
The new gas campus will consist of six buildings totaling
56,954 square feet. Construction will begin this month
and is scheduled to be complete by December 2020. The
largest building of the six will house gas administration, an
operations center,
sales showroom and
warehouse.
Portions of the
existing campus date
back to the beginning
of the Clearwater
Gas System in 1923.
It included a layout
of separate buildings
– warehouse,
administration
building, and installation – on one campus. Clearwater Gas
System also operated a second location in Pasco County
during the late 1980s, which is no longer operational.
An article dated May 23, 1925, and titled, “New Gas Plant
in Operation,” says the current location once housed a huge
LP tank, which was dismantled in the 1970s. During the
first years, gas mains were in place covering the business
district and most residential sections of town. A separate gas
line connected the plant with the town of Belleair Heights
and the Belleview Hotel. At the time, 18 meters were
connected and ready for use. Today, that number has grown
to more than 20,000 residential and commercial gas meters.
“For decades to come, this new facility will serve the needs of
the city’s gas staff and customers,” says Chuck Warrington,
Director of Clearwater Gas System. “We appreciate the
support of our customers, residents and community
partners.”
In addition to breaking ground for the new gas
facility, Clearwater Gas System celebrated 95
years of service in March. This milestone is a
true testament to the city on how community
partnerships continually forge and strengthen
the community.
Clearwater Gas System strives to be the
energy provider of choice. It is owned and
operated as an enterprise utility by the city of
Clearwater. Currently, Clearwater Gas System
serves nearly 24,000 natural and propane gas customers
in 20 municipalities and unincorporated areas in northern
and central Pinellas County and western and central Pasco
County.
Clearwater Gas System is the fourth largest municipal gas
system in Florida and ranks 34th out of nearly 1,000 public
gas systems in the United States. Visit clearwatergas.com
