Sebring have been an outboard boat engine in 1955
and a turbine jet engine in 1968.
The 12 Hours of Sebring was not held in 1974 due to
the fuel shortage. Despite no race, over 2,000 devoted
fans showed up at Sebring anyway!
Derek Bell is probably the most successful driver at
Sebring who never won the 12 Hours of Sebring. He
has been on the podium six times, including four
second-place finishes. He still holds the record for the
fastest race lap ever at Sebring, set in 1986.
British driver Mike Hawthorn became the first driver to
win Sebring and Le Mans in the same year (1955).
In 1959, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jr., son of the late
President, entered a team of three Fiat Abarths.

The surface of Sebring’s front straight is the original
concrete poured in 1941 for the Hendricks Field military
base.
In 1955, six cars started the race without permission,
sneaking on to the track during the Le Mans start. The
cars were reserve entries that failed to qualify. After a
lap around the circuit, they pulled off the track.
Sebring International Raceway is one of the busiest
motorsports facilities in North America active over 300
days a year with private testing, clubs and corporate
events, driving schools and other special events.
Honda’s win in 2016 means Mazda is the only major
Japanese manufacturer not to win overall at Sebring
(Nissan and Toyota have also won Sebring).
