Sebring International Raceway occupies a special place in the 2018-2019 Super Season calendar.
It was on this circuit that the very first race of the FIA WEC took place on March 17, 2012. Seven
years later, the tight hierarchy at the top of the four classes once again signals a wheel-to-wheel
fight. ... and the particularities of the Sebring circuit could well have a hand in the outcome.
The provisional points standings are full of promise for the race under the Florida sun, the sixth round of the
2018-2019 Super Season. It looks like it will be more difficult than ever for drivers and for mechanics, given
the nature of the Sebring International Raceway, which, being on the site of a former aerodrome has a surface
of unforgiving concrete slabs. Could this upset the order of the four categories? This will be the main challenge
in the 1000 miles of racing ahead.
LMP1: Duking it out over a distance
On the eve of the 1000 Miles of Sebring, the two driver crews of Toyota Gazoo
Racing have two wins each. Winners at Spa-Francorchamps and Le Mans,
Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajimal lead the Drivers’
World Championship standings ... but only five points ahead of their team mates
Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José Maria Lopez, who scored two consecutive
victories in the Asian rounds at Fuji and Shanghai.
Solid candidates for the podium at the opening of the Super Season at Spa-
Francorchamps, Rebellion Racing won the 6 Hours of Silverstone ... But over the course
of the championship, the BR1-AER prototypes of SMP Racing have affirmed their
potential: after leading Fuji, the Russian team finished third in Shanghai. So we saw
Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button, the two former Formula One World Champions of
the Super Season, respectively second and third on the Chinese podium. A double duel
is ahead in Florida...one for the competitors against each other and another against the
very demanding Sebring Circuit. Expect some surprises!
