safe.”
Sarge sighs. “Is there any place that is safe? Over.”
The voice on the radio cracks out again, “The infection is happening
everywhere. Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia… everywhere. We’re hold
up in the old Navy yard on the south end of the island. It’s relatively
safe here. The creatures can’t get past the security gates or the fences.
Well… so far that is. Over.”
“Even New Zealand is gone?” Joey asks in a whisper directed at
Doug.
“SHHHH,” Sarge whips at him.
Tony puts his face in his hands. The reality that everyone he knows
is most likely gone is finally sinking in.
“You okay, man?” Joey asks in a whisper.
“Give me a minute, guys,” Tony answers and gets out of his seat. He
climbs out of the tank through the commander’s hatch and jumps down
onto the front slope of the tank. He sits down, his mind bursting with
images of everyone he knows and loves. His mother, his father, brother,
friends… all being torn apart by zombies. The images flood his brain,
the imagined and the witnessed. A river of gore and despair. He weeps
uncontrollably.
Back inside the tank Joey whispers to Doug, “You think he’s going to
be alright?”
“I’m sure he will be. He’s tough. We just heard some pretty horrifying
news.”
“We sure did,” Sarge says, and turns around to look at the pair of
them. “The world has gone to hell.”
The radio crackles back to life, “You still there? Over.”
Sarge clears his throat and turns back toward the radio. “We are. You
just confirmed the worst-case scenario. Processing that over on this
end. Over.”
“We understand. Over.”
“We should plan on a daily information swap. 9pm work for you?
Over.”
“We’ll make sure we’re on at 9pm daily. Don’t hesitate to contact us
at any other time of day. The radio is always manned. Over.”
“We won’t. Same goes for you guys. Thank you for the information.
Tybee Island out.”
Tony feels a hand on his shoulder, and it snaps him out of the dark
hole he had fallen into. “You good, man?” Joey asks.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m good,” Tony says, and wipes some stray tears off
his face. “I think the last six days just hit me all at once. We just heard
that this is happening all over the planet.”
“I feel ya, brother. I was just checking on you.”
“Enough of this. We need to get back to the others on Little Tybee,”
Tony says, and stands up on the front slope of the tank. He stretches,
reaching his arms over his head and arching his back. “I’ve got a
brand-new plan!”
