There’s no Shortcut to Good Health.
So many people are looking for a shortcut or “hack” too
good health, I’ve been there too. But what I’ve learned is,
you can waste a lot of time chasing shortcuts, only to end
up having to start with the basics again. It doesn’t get much
more basic than water, so let’s start there.
Not only is drinking water one of the simplest and yes, maybe
boring, healthy habits to adopt; it may also be one of the
keys to optimizing health and wellness over the long term.
Our bodies are made of 50%-60% water. It gives form to
our cells, lubricates joints and tissues, transports nutrients
and waste, and dissipates excess body heat. I think that
qualifies it as a superhero in our body!
But there needs to be enough of it, or our bodies can’t
function optimally. Just a 1%-2% deficit can start to cause
problems. Maybe we start feeling stiff and achy or get headaches
or intestinal issues. Many people reach for a pill or
supplement to fix the problem when in fact the root cause
could be chronic underhydration.
Have you ever had a plant that you watered…sporadically
at best? Do you think it was healthy or stressed? Why is it
important to keep our cars lubed? It reduces friction….
and friction wears things out. Whether it’s your knee joint

or a u-joint in your car…they both
require lubrication.
On average, women need 70 ounces
and men need 100 ounces of water
per day. Water needs do vary between
individuals, factors such as current health, amount/
intensity of activity, sweat rate, to name a few, have an
impact on our hydration requirements.
Isn’t it enough to just drink when we’re thirsty? Perhaps for
some, but keep in mind that as we age our thirst tends to
be less pronounced. And some people say they don’t like
the taste of water…but that doesn’t negate the bodies need
for it.
So, before chasing after another shortcut, I’m suggesting to
start by paying attention to whether or not you’re drinking
enough water to maintain your body’s proper hydration
level. Your body will thank you!
