I sit on the Advisory Board for the Master of Liberal Arts &
Sciences program at Asheville in which I served as Board Chair
for two years.
Q: You’re a mom and work full-time as well. How do you
maintain balance with all that is on your plate?
Goodness, isn’t that the million dollar question! Being hyper
organized with laser focused time management are skills that I
mastered during graduate school and have bled beautifully into
my personal and professional life. I write everything down. A
color-coded calendar helps keep everything straight and everyone
where they’re supposed to be. Being married to a very supportive
husband has been key…and raising strong, independent
children who support and respect each other enables me to be
productive at work so I can really show up (both mentally and
emotionally) when it’s mommy time.
Q: What’s the biggest impact you have seen with Buy Haywood?
Since its inception in 2007, Buy Haywood has worked to
connect a growing base of community-minded consumers with
quality locally grown products through various outreach projects.
Agriculture has always been a big part of Haywood County
and rural western North Carolina. Support of local agripreneurs
keeps farms viable and preserves access to local products while
protecting farmland and the rural character of the region. According
to the former US Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack,
US agriculture is connected to one in twelve American jobs. Supporting
local farmers, growers and producers strengthens rural
economies and helps fuel innovation—at the local and regional
levels.
The biggest impact that I have observed over my tenure with
Buy Haywood is self-sufficiency. By that I mean that local
stakeholders have taken up the mantle by adopting some of
Buy Haywood’s most successful outreach strategies and are
utilizing them to continue to drive product sales and consumer
enthusiasm. One example, in 2012-13 Buy Haywood ran a
grant supported outreach project called “Cooking Local.” For
two years we facilitated cooking demonstrations (complete with
free recipe cards and food samples) at venues such as farmers
markets, street festivals and community events. In 2019 you
can visit Haywood’s Historic Farmers Market, as well as other
venues, and enjoy free tastes from individual farms and take
home a recipe card. Farmers and producers experienced the
success of our outreach measures back in 2012-13 and have
adopted the research-based best practice as their own.
Q: You’ve made such an incredible impact already. Where do
you go from here? What’s your bigger purpose?
Agriculture contributes greatly to the character and economic
future of our community, to the quality of life of the people
living here, and to the appeal of our region. One aspect of
Buy Haywood that I really admire is, as an organization, it
has remained laser-focused on Haywood County. It is easy for
organizations like ours to experience program success and feel
tempted to grow into more of a regional agency. Such growth
often times results in disconnect between advocate organization
and stakeholders. By staying hyper-local, we are in constant
communication with our stakeholders and are able to respond
pretty quickly to their priorities and remain solution-focused
on addressing challenges specific to Haywood County. Our
agritourism efforts were born out of such dialog and gains momentum
with each new season. So watch for our Find you Adventure!
2019-20 Buy Haywood Agritourism Guide and digital
companion TASTE of Haywood. TASTE is a free monthly
eMagazine companion to our agritourism efforts. It enables us
to tell farm and destination stories behind the agritourism experience,
share recipes, and visually embodies the spirit of farming
and agriculture in Haywood County. More information on
both projects can be found at BuyHaywood.com.
