ARNOLD HILL
How long have you guys played together?
We have been playing music together since 2011 in
this band and other various musical projects.
How would you describe your musical style?
We’ve tried our luck with almost every major genre,
even mixing two unlikely combos - like playing
heavy rock on a bluegrass tune. After a little trial
and error, we landed in a sweet spot of what we call
“Aggressive Americana”. This could be described as
lyrically driven songs with a rock edge.
Who are your influences?
Something else unique about us is that we all
have different influences. Mike is influenced by
singer/songwriters such as Chris Knight, Steve
Earle, Robert Earl Keen, and John Prine. Sam
takes influence from P-Nut (311), Joe Dart
(Vulfpeck), and Tim Commerford (Rage Against
the Machine). Heath’s influences include but are
not limited to Matt Greiner (August Burns Red),
John Bonham (Led Zeppelin), Mike Portnoy,
and Jared Easterling (Fit For A King).
“No matter where we play
or who we play to, we are
going to have a good time.”
What do you love about playing together?
We make it a point that no matter where we play,
or who we play to, we are going to have a good
time. That resonates to a crowd. We also know
exactly what each other is going to do when we’re
playing, so our sound is super tight. At the end of
the day. We’re not just bandmates, we are family.
The love that we have for our music is translated
from the bond and respect we have for each other.
How has this area inspired you as artists?
This place is where we met and formed
Arnold Hill. The band name comes from a road
in Sylva where Sam and Mike lived for almost
7 years. There were many good times from “the
hill” that we felt sharing its name would be an
appropriate tribute. Ultimately, we try to incorporate
the love we have for the Great Smoky
Mountains into the songs we play. We hope our
listeners will share this same admiration.
