BENEFITS OF
INTELLIGENT RACK PDUs
Intelligent rack PDUs resolve
the main data center challenges
covered earlier. Table 1 illustrates
the key features of the various
intelligent rack PDU types.
The benefits for selecting
the right intelligent rack PDU
for the customer’s application
are outlined in Table 2.
Energy cost can be reduced
by identifying inefficient
equipment, malfunctioning
equipment, or underutilized
equipment. Replacing old
or comatose equipment with
more energy efficient equipment
contributes to energy
cost savings.
Cooling overprovisioning
contributes to increased energy
costs. Cooling makes up approximately
40 percent of the data
center energy cost.9 One way
to reduce this cost is to raise
the set temperature in the data
center. Intelligent rack PDUs
with measuring and monitoring
functionality enable
data center managers to safely
raise temperature and monitor
the impact on data center
equipment and overall performance.
For every degree rise
in set temperature, there is
approximately a 4 percent
energy cost savings.10
