Medical Services
Medical care in Charlotte County is comprehensive and readily
available, offering treatment in virtually every medical specialty and the
latest technologies. More than 300 medical physicians and surgeons,
osteopathic physicians and chiropractic physicians operate in the county.
In addition to the three hospitals located in Charlotte County, there are
also several multispecialty health clinics and walk-in clinics. Counseling
and rehabilitation centers offer cardiac therapy, physical therapy, speech
therapy and treatment for substance abuse and stress.
BAYFRONT HEALTH PORT CHARLOTTE (opened 1962)
AND PUNTA GORDA (opened 1947) are both accredited hospitals
by The Joint Commission (TJC) and part of a regional network of seven
hospitals along the I-75 corridor. The Port Charlotte campus consists of
a 254-bed full-service facility offering comprehensive services in areas
such as emergency care and orthopedics; the only licensed obstetric
and pediatric unit and Level II NICU in Charlotte County, as well as the
only facility in SWFL—and 1 of 5 in the state—to receive TJC’s Perinatal
Care Certification; Comprehensive Stroke Center; on-campus Southwest
Florida Heart Center which offers all-private rooms and is an accredited
chest pain center with PCI providing cardiac services for more than 30
years; and the largest and longest running robotics program in the County
offering surgical options for gynecology, general surgery, colorectal,

FAWCETT MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, a full-service acute care
hospital with 237 licensed beds and over 380 physicians on staff who

care hospital, offering a wide variety of healthcare services. With the

CHARLOTTE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE, INC. is our
area’s largest nonprofit provider of community-based behavioral health
care, offering a full range of mental health and substance abuse services.
Their mission is to partner with patients to instill hope, inspire growth,
and embrace life. In business for 50 years, they serve more than 12,000
children, adolescents, adults, and families a year through 25+ services
and programs. Their main campus in Punta Gorda also houses a
medically supervised drug and alcohol treatment center, a state-of-theart
crisis stabilization unit, and a drop-in center for those with severe,
persistent mental illness. Northside Psychiatric Services, a division of
Charlotte Behavioral located in Port Charlotte, focuses on individual
therapy, children’s groups, counseling and psychiatric services, as well as

FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IN CHARLOTTE
COUNTY provides childhood vaccines under the “Vaccines for
Children” program for children ages 0-18. Clinic services are provided
based on a sliding fee scale, on family size and income. Services include
adult immunizations; family planning; tuberculosis and sexually
transmitted disease control; WIC (Women, Infants, and Children
nutrition services); dental services for children and adults; and refugee
health. Other services include vital statistics and environmental health
regulation enforcement.

FAMILY HEALTH CENTERS OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA
medical offices accept assignments from Medicare, Medicaid and private
insurance. FHC provides assistance to its patients in determining their
eligibility to receive healthcare benefits under Florida’s rapidly changing
Medicaid system. FHC works with those who are uninsured or who have
limited coverage. The Port Charlotte office is located in Schoolhouse

VIRGINIA B. ANDES VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY CLINIC,
provides no-cost volunteer Medical, Pharmacy and Wellness Services
to the under-served in Charlotte County. Eligibility is based on being
a Charlotte County resident 18 years or older, having no insurance
including Medicare & Medicaid, and income 200% of the Federal
Poverty Level or less. The clinic is open from 9:00am to 9pm, walk-ins
are welcome. The Pharmacy is open between 9:00am & 12:00 noon
to accept prescriptions on Monday, Tuesday & Friday and dispense
medications on Tuesday & Wednesday. For emergency prescriptions,
