and in turn that helps them with their school grades and
their socialization in their being a part of their school
community,” says Lois, a Clothes To Kids volunteer.
Clothes To Kids has served over 4,000 students in its
6 years. “We’re always surprised at people who haven’t
heard about us,” says Dianne, another Clothes To Kids
volunteer. A Clothes To Kids flyer goes into the fully
loaded backpacks that organizations and businesses, like
Chad McMahon State Farm, donate during the Back to
School Backpacks school supply drive. Big picture, our
local Clothes To Kids has a high percentage reach. “We
feel good in relation to Denver that has a big Clothes
To Kids and St. Petersburg and Tampa, because their
percentages are not as high as ours. But, we’re able –
being a whole lot smaller – to get to know our families
and to get closer to the teachers who see these students
every day. So, our percentages are higher, but not as high
as we want them,” says Sylvia.

the organization may be in need of additional space.
“We will probably need to establish a new spot, a new
residence. And that place will need to be in the center of
the county, because the people we serve need an easy,
accessible way to get here,” Sylvia says. “It also needs to
be very private, because what we do is confidential for
these families. So, that’s in our long-range future. We are
looking for some storage areas right now.”
Clothes To Kids currently has about 50 volunteers. People
and organizations are encouraged to come and tour the
campus. “We invite them to learn a little more about us,
and generally people find just what they want to do for
us,” explains Sylvia.
