BOOK
REVIEW
By Nell Klein
TH1RT3EN
By Steve Cavanagh
I will start this book review by saying, unequivocally, that this is not
a “chick book.” I don’t mean that a woman won’t enjoy the book, it just
means that there are no hearts, flowers, cute babies or budding romances.
There is murder and a lot of it! I’m not spoiling anything by saying this
because it says it on the front cover, “The serial killer isn’t on trial, HE’S
ON THE JURY.” Well, how do you assure that you’re on a jury? You commit
murder to get there, that’s how. If they made this book into a movie, there
are parts that I would have to cover my eyes. But, enough about that. I’ll
tell you what I can about this edge-of-the-seat thriller that you won’t be
able to put down.
The book begins with Joshua Kane who is a really bad man. It seems that
he will go to any lengths to get on a jury and if it means killing a couple of
people along the way, so what? All that matters is the end result. But what
trial he is trying to get on and his reasons for being on the jury are the real
questions of the book and that’s when things really get interesting.
Next enter Eddie Flynn, defense attorney, who lives in the back room of
his office in New York City. He is hired by high powered attorney Rudy Carp
to be the second chair on a very high profile murder case involving actor
Robert “Bobby” Solomon. Bobby, who is accused of killing his wife of two
months, actress Ariella Bloom and his security guard Carl Tozer, says he’s
innocent. Rudy Carp thinks Bobby is being framed by the cops and wants
Eddie to prove it. You see, Eddie, who is a former con man, has a rather
checkered past, and doesn’t mind going up against the cops when most
lawyers won’t. But, when the movie studio that is paying Rudy to represent
Bobby decides that he’s guilty, they fire Rudy’s team. That’s when Eddie
decides to represent Bobby on his own.
This is the point in the story that things get really interesting. Eddie
sees things about this case that no one else does. He starts looking at past
murders and finds a connection between several others and the Bobby
Solomon case. He sets out to prove that Bobby didn’t kill anyone. Instead,
it’s the work of a very intelligent, ruthless serial killer. Of course, we know
that the serial killer’s name is Joshua Kane, we just don’t know exactly
who that is. But Eddie won’t stop until he’s figured it all out and sets his
client free.
When reading this book, you realize that Eddie Flynn is probably a
recurring character because of so many references to his past. So I googled
it and, sure enough, there were two previous Eddie Flynn books. They didn’t
get the high ratings that Thirteen did, but I think I might read them anyway.
I just adored Eddie and would like to read more about his character.
All in all, this book totally deserved five roses. You won’t be able to put
it down and in spite of some fairly gruesome scenes, I highly recommend
it! Sometimes I wonder how authors keep coming up with these ingenious
story lines. I’ve never read one like this before!
Until next time, pray for cool weather and read a book. If it’s a good
read, pass it on!
