Savannah Praline
Company
Happier than a fat kid in a candy shop! That was me alright as I browsed
around one of the island’s sweetest new businesses, Savannah Praline
Company. The smell alone as you enter this unique little shop is enough
to shift your taste buds to attention. Homemade candies, an assortment
of bulk candy and gummies, Byrd Cookies, Cotton Candy, Old Fashioned
Sodas, Chocolate Truffles, Frozen Dole Whip, not to mention an assortment
of gift tins, owner Allen N. has all the bases covered, and just in time for the
holidays.
With four daughters at home, Allen turned a hobby of making homemade
Pralines with his children into a full-time business. This eclectic little shop is
definitely reminiscent of an old time, small town candy shop/soda fountain,
with a modern flair.
14 TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | NOV 2019
The day we popped in, we caught a fresh batch of classic Pralines as they
were cooling, as well as Allen in the middle of a batch of homemade Tybee
Terrapins (turtle) Candies. We sampled some taffy and gummies and even a
Pineapple Dole Whip Float!
First, those Classic Pralines, with just the right mix of that caramelized
sugar and crunchy pecans, they were sinfully delicious. I have to say, I don’t
think I have ever indulged in a Chocolate Praline before and holy cow,
so delicious. I’ll definitely be sending some of these puppies up north to
Yankeeland for the holidays.
Next, we headed to the bulk candy. For some reason, nothing says beach
like Salt Water Taffy. We went for the strawberry banana and it was ooey
gooey tasty. I’ve never been one to pass up Gummy Candies, so of course
we had to sample some of those as well. So soft and chewy, just how I like
‘em, with several varieties to choose from.
Next, we dove into a Pineapple Dole Whip Float. Cool, delicious pineapple
juice with a dole whip floater. Super refreshing and cooling on a sunny beach
afternoon.
You also can’t help but notice the abundance of old-fashioned bottled sodas,
including a line by Marilyn Monroe, Farrah Fawcett and even an energy drink
by Bob Ross! Personally, I’d pick Farrah every time. They also carry a whole
line of Vidalia Onion preserves and jarred goodies, as well Byrd Cookies and
Christmas Tins, Gift Baskets and more. Shipping is available and you can
find more info about mail order and online ordering at Savannahpraline.com.
This little treat of a shop is a welcomed addition to Tybee, located at 204
First St., (next to the laundromat) and is a must on your to-do list. Make sure
you check out the clever parking signs along Second Avenue, they’re sure
to make you chuckle!
