BG’s Seafood Co-Op
Forget everything you know about your typical seafood dive and let me
tell you about the new BG’s Seafood Co-op. This place is awesome!!!
BG’s is the sister company of Bubba Gumbo’s, opened by Caitlin Burns
of Bubba Gumbo’s fame, and Gordon Card, chef extraordinaire. This is
exactly where you want to go to buy your seafood. Not only is it fresh and
clean, you want to hang out there and just enjoy the surroundings. I am so
impressed with this place!!
First of all, it doesn’t smell like dead fish. It’s sparkling clean and smells
like it. It is so welcoming and I haven’t even gotten to the good part of this
place yet! All their seafood is fresh fresh fresh! There is no freezing and
saving for a later date. If the product doesn’t sell immediately, it’s outta
there! All of their seafood is bought as local as possible, with most of it
coming right from the dock the building is sitting upon.
The Co-Op’s selections change constantly, but does have some constant
favorites that are always available, from Flounder, Swordfish, Shrimp and
Crab Cakes to Hunter Cattle Company beef and pork products. Boudain
Sausage and Seafood Boudain is also a constant and my absolute favorite
is a Low Country Boil bag that feeds two. Everything is in there and it
literally takes 30 seconds dropped into boiling water and voila: Dinner is
served! Love that!!
Along with the freshest seafood in town, BG’s also offers homemade
cocktail sauce, honey lime siracha, honey butter, and bourbon bbq sauces.
That, my friends, is just naming a few.
Also available are beer and wine package sales that include an excellent
variety for any taste bud and there is also a build your own six pack! Yes
please!
Gordon told me the premise of BG’s is to provide a chef’s interpretation
of a seafood market that can not only discuss food preparation, but can
also pair your meal with what is going to go best with it, from the wine and
beer, to the sauce’s and sides. The staff is more than happy to help with
preparation tips and also how to store products as needed. The best part
of that is you can go home with your dinner and pretend like you did all the
hard work yourself! Future stuff is coming and we can look forward to Take
N Bake and sides that include everything from salads to veggies!
While you are waiting for your food to get prepped, you can stroll around
and check out the latest artwork, paintings and photographs from all of the
island’s latest up-and-comers that you need to know about. The view out
of the back windows isn’t bad either!
This place is a must check out on a weekly basis. They post all their
specials every Thursday on their Facebook page, so make sure you check
it out for all the latest. Hours are Thursday through Sunday from high noon
to 7pm.They are located at 4 Old Highway 80. Turn left at the end and park.
Bubba Gumbo’s restaurant is located on the left and BG’s Seafood Co-Op is
on the right. I will definitely see you there!
How to filibuster an article for the Tybee Beachcomber:
• Force yourself to focus.
• Initiate drinking procedures.
• Lie your ass off.
• Imagine actually applying yourself for once.
• Basically just pull random ideas out of the air until it appears you have
a complete thought.
• Underwear.
• See if Becca will write your story like she does Paul Cales’ Zombie thing.
• Tell Alaina you’ll try harder next month.
• Exclaim randomly to show emotion!
• Relax, this isn’t the first time you’ve disappointed the masses.
Wow. That was impressive. I’d like to see Taxi Tales or Behind The Tape
pull off a whirlwind adventure like that while wine drunk in an empty
bathtub.
Also, shout out to Michael Crosby - AKA Crosby of Salt Island Fish & Beer
(also, Crosby of Crosby and Lydia) who figured out when I last did Fun
Facts - (Fun Fact #1: It was June of 2018), and helped rename my article
(Fun Fact #2: With his suggestion I have gone with Bad Advice from a
Flor-idiot). I offered prizes for the person or persons who figured these
out for me. I was going to buy them a beer - which I will still do, but I had
to one up it for Crosby. So here and now I can announce Crosby will be
bartender of the month for December! Congratulations buddy! And thank
you for all your help!
