
After her trip to Israel, Abigail wrote, “I have now been back in
America for a couple weeks since my amazing trip to Israel, and I
wanted to thank you so much for the ZOA’s support in getting me
there. . . .I am so grateful to have gone on this journey, and know it
would not have been possible without your help.”

Maya Davis is a sophomore at the Hillel Academy who participated in the NCSY – Girls
Israel Volunteer Experience. Maya wrote, “I believe there is no better way to develop a strong
connection to Israel than to be seeing all it has to offer and meeting and working with its
people.”
A sophomore at Allderdice High School, Abigail Segel joined the NFTY Adventure
Program. “Love, justice, and community, values which Jews hold dearly, are too often
threatened by forces of hate and ignorance. Zionism is the striving to ensure the longevity of
Judaism’s homeland and therefore its value, which are all so intrinsically connected,” Abigail
wrote in her essay.
Noah Strauss is a sophomore at Shady Side Academy and attended the Emma Kaufmann
Camp SIT Israel Leadership Experience. Noah wrote, “To me, Israel and Zionism symbolize
a place where I can be who I want to be, a place where I never feel unsafe, a place that is an
experience of a lifetime, and a place I can call home.”
After her trip to Israel, Abigail Segel wrote a letter of appreciation to Executive Director
Stuart Pavilack, recounting her many unforgettable experiences: “I have now been back in

Kandy Reidbord Ehrenwerth Memorial Lecture
Charlene “Kandy” Reidbord Ehrenwerth was an active leader in both the Jewish and
broader civic communities, including serving as an officer of the ZOA. She was a prominent
Pittsburgh trial lawyer, known for her aggressive protection of human and civil rights. Kandy
served as the first female Assistant District Attorney in Allegheny County and then served
as an Assistant Attorney General of Pennsylvania. After Kandy was tragically killed in a car
accident in 1992, her family endowed the biannual ZOA Meeting and Lecture to perpetuate
her memory.
