U.S. Latina Marines at the 2019 National LATINA Symposium.
We finish the year with our special tribute to Latinas in the military
and veterans. The National LATINA Symposium was once again a
great success. Recognizing the accomplishments of Latinas in the
military services has been an inspiring endeavor as we work with all the Military
Services and the Pentagon in the selection and recognition of these outstanding
individuals. We began this program in 2004 with the endorsement of the
Department of Defense and the United States Air Force. Soon the U.S. Navy, U.S.
Army, National Guard the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard joined us
in this effort. The program remains the only one of its kind in our country. Over 150
Latinas and two Latino servicemen have earned the Distinguished Military
Service Award. Each award recipient is nominated by their respective command
and award recipients have traveled from all over the world to receive their award.
The program’s success has been bittersweet. We have highlighted the
extraordinary work that Latinas perform in the Service, but sadly we have
discovered that as some of the highest-ranking Latina senior officers retire no
Latinas are coming up the ranks to fill their places. Major General Angela Salinas
of the U.S. Marine Corps retired a few years back and this year Major General
Linda Urrutia-Varhall, from the U.S. Air Force has retired as well. Any Latinas in line
to take their place? Sadly no. And it seems that this trend is not likely to change
anytime soon.
So, what can be done to make a difference? We can begin by being
vocal about this issue and urge our Hispanic Caucus in Congress to address
this inequality. We need everybody to get involved!
This month, we wrap up our 25th Anniversary of LATINA Style Magazine and
prepare to celebrate our LATINA Style 50 Awards and Diversity Leaders Conference
this coming February 11 & 12, 2020 in Washington, D.C. It will be a very special
occasion as the Welcome Reception for the conference will honor the
25th Anniversary of LATINA Style Magazine with our Founders Awards, the companies,
and individuals that made possible the birth of our magazine. I hope you can
be a part of this historic celebration.
From all of us at LATINA Style we thank you for your support and we wish you
all a Happy Holiday Season and a very prosperous New Year.
