THE ART OF THANKFULNESS
Thanksgiving has always been a very important holiday to me. Our family is scattered all over the country and it’s the one holiday that we have always
strived to spend together. There’s something special about spending this day with family or friends, and it truly does make you thankful for the people who
are most important in your life.
But when the turkey is all gone, and the holiday is over, how can you keep that feeling of thankfulness in your heart? Sometimes we all forget to be
grateful for the blessings in our lives. But, actually, it’s a pretty simple thing to do. Here are some ways I’ve come up with to keep that feeling of thankfulness
year round:
1. Show your gratitude. Pretty simple. If someone does something nice for you, saying thank you goes a long way. It’s a “feel good moment” for both the
giver and the recipient. You never know how important those two little words are.
2. Try to do one (or more) good deed a day. There are lots of ways to do this. You can give the gift of time to someone who may need you; help a
colleague at work; write a thank you note; buy a gift for a loved one; let someone cut in front of you at the cashier’s line; and yes, help the little old lady
across the street. Any little thing you can do for others will not only make them feel special, but yourself as well.
3. Show affection. The human touch is such a powerful instrument. Often we forget to show affection to the people who are most important to us. Hug
someone you love today and let them know you care. It will make you both feel good.
4. Smile. Smiles are contagious. Share yours with someone and I bet they will give one back. Better yet, laugh!
5. Learn to say yes. So many opportunities are lost by saying no. Don’t be one of those who sits and lets life pass you by. Say yes next time someone
invites you to do something. You might just have the time of your life!
6. Take time for yourself. Learn how to slow down and relax. Enjoy some solitude and quiet time.
7. Find joy in the little things. The best things in life are free. Take a walk, visit friends, enjoy the beauty of this world.
8. Think positive thoughts. Bad things happen to all of us. How you choose to deal with a bad situation can define who you are. Instead of complaining
about it, learn from it. No one enjoys being around negative people.
9. Learn to forgive. We have all been hurt by someone we care about. You can choose to hold on to the anger and resentment or you can choose
forgiveness. By choosing forgiveness, you will find peace, hope, gratitude and joy.
10. Celebrate Life! Wake up each morning and greet the day with a smile. Be thankful that you are alive and have been given another day.
Remember that a good life is when you smile often, laugh a lot, love much, and realize how blessed you are for what you have. So start practicing the
art of thankfulness today!
A Tybee Thank You
Bill Cummins’ Fair at the Legion on October 10th was a great time of
Tybee friends and family working together to put on a safe and fun
celebration! Thank you to everyone that donated their time and/or
donated a prize. A special thank you to Tess at the Legion for all of her
hard work on setting up and helping out, as well as to Eric Thomas, who
got the games rolling.
Bill would have had the best time.
