Memo From
The Mayor
By Mayor Shirley Sessions
Wow. Fall – November – COVID-19 – 2020 – Thanksgiving: what are
you thankful for?
Thanksgivings are traditionally spent with family, friends, going to
or watching football games together, eating LOTS of turkey, veggies,
pies, more turkey and more pies….going to a movie after dinner
and reflecting on things we’re thankful for. This year hopefully we’ll
be doing the same as years before – however, there may be some
new traditions on how we do it. Rather than multitudes of families
and friends gathered around the dinner table or TV’s, some may be
ZOOMING, SKYPING or gathering on similar meeting platforms….and if
in person, maybe wearing fashionable face masks. While some football
games are still scheduled, not all may allow fans in stadiums, and don’t
count on that after dinner trip to the theater.
However, there is still much to be thankful for and COVID-19 may be
the culprit that forces us to reflect on but a few things we often take
for granted:
Family: More families are actually renewing their relationships – eating
and having conversations together; playing games, whether video or
board games, it’s a chance to connect.
Technology/books/hobbies: Whether you’re reading Kindle, listening to
audible, reading or taking up a new hobby – painting, writing, sewing,
cooking or learning a foreign language, people actually have more time
inside and are using it differently.
Pets: The Pandemic has proven to be a potentially lonely time for many
who do not, or cannot go out for various reasons and who often lack
family and are limited to spending in-person time with friends. Animal
shelters have seen an increase in adoptions and fostering, because
after all, pets not only provide companionship and comfort, they make
us laugh and don’t judge us for eating too much or not getting properly
dressed on a daily basis!
In addition to the above, I am especially thankful for my health and
that of my family, for the opportunity to live at the beach among other
beach lovers, for a community of people who genuinely care for each
other, even if we may not all agree or even like each other – we are
one – in good times and bad. I am grateful for the freedom to choose,
and to speak freely. I am thankful for those who fought, and still fight,
to afford me these freedoms. I am thankful for those who risk their lives
daily for me, for my family, my friends, my community and my country.
As you gather around ZOOM or hopefully, your dinner table with family
and friends, think about and share with each other the little, and big
things you’re thankful for during this unforgettable 2020 COVID-19
Thanksgiving. Blessings to you and yours!
