one left
a mark on the 1980s with a form of casual
glitz. Donning casual wear in the workplace
became a widely embraced trend. At the
end of the typical work week, “Fridays” were
honored and dubbed as “casual.”
This newly adopted fashion statement
created an occasion for everyone to wear
their favorite jeans to work. Mainstream
fashion was signifi cantly affected by popular
musical bands and particular genres. Casual
attire eventually became the new standard
“black tie” ensemble. Sportswear, leisure
wear, active wear, professional attire and
formal wear alike were all modeled after
top brands and icons. Clothing with more
of a deconstructed look such as frayed,
ripped, faded and torn jeans became a
quintessential fashion statement. Boo
Gemes, owner of Boo Gemes fashion
boutique in Boca Grande, is in fact
renown for her custom line of jeans;
especially white jeans.
Is it mere coincidence that at the
same time, the t-shirt suddenly
became en vogue as
it commanded the
highest price tag that
had ever been paid
for the basic wardrobe
staple?
Ditching everything
that had been popular
over the last three decades, both men and
women began transforming themselves
as minimalism appeared on the scene
throughout the 1990s.
The 21st century showcased the remix of
the 60s, 70s and the 80s all rolled together
into one. The early and mid 2000s saw an
explosion of designer logos as they were
considered to be a brandishing status
symbol (LV and Gucci, and also Chanel).
They appeared on bags, scarves, belts, caps
and on the clothes as well. A major detail not
to be overlooked, was the brand of designer
logo prominently displayed on women’s
handbags making a perfect accessory to
any outfi t wherever they
were carried.
Due to the rise
in globalization
designers could easily
reduce the costs of
fashion production by
outsourcing. Imitation
runway looks rose to
popularity as everything
became affordable high
fashion. Boca Grande
fashionistas ushered
in the new millennium
by thrifting at Boca
Bargains.
