Capitol Theatre’s 100th Anniversary

TED MAGUIRE
It is the Centennial Year of Celebration for the Nancy and David Bilheimer Capitol
Theatre in downtown Clearwater. The theater opened March 21, 1921 with the
screening of the motion picture Dinty, which was about a newsboy whose fight to
care for his ailing mother led to a conflict with drug smugglers. When the theater
was facing foreclosure in 2009, the City of Clearwater purchased it and entered
into a partnership with Ruth Eckerd Hall to manage and operate the facility. The
theater was renovated in 2013 and renamed in 2019 because of the Bilheimers’
philanthropic donation.
Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard and Ruth Eckerd Hall CEO Susan Crockett celebrated
the 100th anniversary of Capitol Theatre, which is operated by Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Enjoying Nature’s Bounty
Pineapple Press has published an
interesting and informative guide to the
edible plants found in our state’s woods
and fields. Written by Richard Deuerling
and Peggy Lantz, Florida’s Incredible Wild
Edibles has illustrations by Elizabeth Smith
and is published in cooperation with the
Florida Native Plant Society. It tells how
our Florida plants such as dandelions,
sassafras and more can provide nutritious
and tasty treats, including the flora that
often grows wild and can be foraged all
year long. Florida’s Incredible Wild Edibles
can be ordered at pineapplepress.com to help

St. Pete Beach Best in the USA
St. Pete Beach has been named the best beach in the country in the Travelers’
Choice awards of Tripadvisor, which assists those who use its large travel
guidance platform. The designations are based on user submitted reviews
and rankings. Last year, St. Pete Beach came in as second best. This year,
it beat beaches in Hawaii and California to take first place. Madeira Beach
in Florida made it to ninth place in this competition, while Treasure Island
was 16th and Clearwater Beach was 18th. St. Pete Beach was also named as
the fifth best beach in the world. These ratings make it easy to understand
why the Tampa Bay area is one of the top international beach destinations.
