Toms River Seaport Society
and Maritime Museum
The Toms River Seaport Society’s maritime museum,
dedicated to preserving the rich maritime heritage of
the Barnegat Bay, occupies three buildings: the 1868
carriage house of Joseph Francis, the inventor of the
Life Car; the Joseph Lappin Restoration Shop; and the
A-cat building, where you’ll find a beautiful collection
of historic wooden boats.
Immerse yourself in a historically rich self-guided tour
of over thirty boats from the Barnegat Bay/Toms River
area, a collection of antique boating hardware and
equipment and historic photos and paintings of local
nautical images. Explore the importance of the “sneakbox,”
a type of boat used exclusively in Barnegat Bay
to navigate the shallow waters for hunting and fishing.
The Toms River Seaport Society hosts a variety of events
throughout the season. Don’t miss the Annual Wooden
Boat Festival held in July in downtown Toms River,
celebrating classic and antique boats, pirate culture,
maritime artisans, food and music. Children are invited to
a model-boat-building class where they will try out their
constructions’ seaworthiness.
