While Shakespeare never wrote a Broadway musical,
imagine what he could have written if he had been
able to experience musicals such as Chicago, Annie,
A Chorus Line, South Pacific and Les Misérables.
This is one of the reasons that the hit show Something Rotten!
resonates with members of its audiences, even if they are neither
well-versed in Broadway musicals nor in Shakespearean plays.
Everyone will enjoy this new show.
The show’s most memorable song is “A Musical.” It is sung by
one of the famous clairvoyant Nostradamus’ soothsaying relatives
to a would-be playwright. This showstopping number, which
predicts that the next big thing in Elizabethan theater would
be musicals, is filled with hilarious lyrical, musical and visual
references to Shakespeare and to classic Broadway musical fare.
The show opened on Broadway in 2015 and was an instant
success, as the Tudor timeline gave an extra spin to the wellexecuted
traditional show business plot of “putting on a
show.” Something Rotten!, directed and choreographed by
Casey Nicholaw, whose work includes Aladdin and The Book
of Mormon, will tickle and entertain you with its clever take on
Broadway as if it had existed while William Shakespeare was
the king of the stage in Elizabethan London. 9
