“Paint provides not only a transition in color but the varied
use of different finishes can also provide a noticeable interest
Furniture can often be used itself to
create division. A sofa and love seat
can often section off a room and easily
convert the living room/dining room
combo into two completely separate
spaces. The back of the sofa can
create the impression of a wall. My
personal favorite, if you don’t have a
love seat, a tall floor lamp at the edge
of the sofa or in a corner placed just
right may cast a shadow completing
the space you are creating.
Floor treatments are some of the
easiest choices. Remember rugs are
not just for hardwood floors but serve
equally in carpeted areas. They create
space on their own, can provide the
ability for color transitions, create
additional warmth, and provide great
opportunity for creativity. Remember
rugs come not only in color variety
but texture varieties as well. From a
very thick short pile for a more formal
atmosphere to a long shaggy style for
a cozy inviting environment will serve
you well. You will also find rugs in a
variety of price ranges, so if you are
working with a limited budget you will
have no problem finding the perfect
floor treatment no matter what you
are trying to accomplish.
Another simple and inexpensive
option is wall treatment. A chair rail
in a dining space is often the simplest
way to create a transition from one
space to another. Chair rail is readily
available at all your local home stores
and can be easily installed on your
own. Your local Lowes and Home
Depot stores both offer classes on
do-it-yourself installation for even
the most novice of us. While you are
there, take a look at the paint. Even
the subtlest change in color opens the
door for a creative opportunity while
keeping a certain flow throughout
the home. Remember that colors that
can balance your emotions and create
between spaces.”
