MAKE TIME FOR YOU

The seasons are changing. This
is a great time to make positive
changes in our life. Many people
tend to take care of everyone and
everything else first. I found out
the hard way that I have to take
care of myself, or I am of no use
to anyone. I was diagnosed with
breast cancer in 2006. That diagnosis
brought my life to a screeching
halt. Before cancer, I had spent
years taking care of everyone else
and putting myself last. I still take
care of everyone else, but I make
sure I take care of me. Taking care
of me includes spending time
alone, eating healthy and working
out – things that make me the
healthiest version of me.
Having spent over twenty
years in the fitness industry, I have
heard it all. People tell me they
will start working-out when they
have more time. They say they will
begin making positive changes in
their lives when they’re not under
as much stress. They say they will
eat healthier after the holidays.
They say they will begin walking,
start a weight-training program,
begin yoga, eat less fat, eat fewer
carbs, or adhere to a plan at
the gym after some future event
transpires. Perhaps there is never
a perfect time to start anything.
We have the opportunity to begin
a healthy lifestyle every day when
we open our eyes.

People often believe that it
takes considerable work to be
healthy. I disagree. One does
not have to make huge changes
to begin reaping the rewards of
a healthy lifestyle. Here are four
suggestions that may be helpful:
(1) Set small attainable
goals. Set goals that you know
you can achieve. This will
help you to feel successful.
Your goal for one week could
be to park far away from the
entrance to your grocery store
and walk to the door. Your
goal could be to cut out carbonated
beverages. You could
decide to add a healthy salad
