Manatee Urgent Care offers accessible locations to stop in and get this year’s
recommended flu vaccine.
Influenza is a highly infectious viral disease. The flu vaccine is especially important for individuals at increased
risk of complications from flu, including children six months of age and older, individuals aged 65 and older and
those with chronic medical conditions.
Unfortunately, the flu is a problem every winter and can’t be avoided. Therefore, no matter what your age,
getting the flu vaccination is the best protection for you and your family members.

Flu facts
The number of influenza associated deaths varies substantially by year. Persons 65 and older account for
approximately 90 percent of deaths. School-aged children typically have the highest attack rates during
community outbreaks of influenza and serve as a major source of transmission of influenza within communities.
Individuals who have not been vaccinated should avoid contact with infants.
The sooner the better
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting the flu vaccine by the end of
October for optimal protection. The body takes two weeks to produce the antibodies that fight flu. However,
people can get vaccinated as late as January. Children six months to eight years of age should be vaccinated early
in the season because they often require two doses that need to be administered at least two weeks apart. Overall,
the sooner in the flu season you get the vaccine, the more likely you will be protected for the season.
