I’m going to be honest, I haven’t always been a person who thought about
giving back to others and volunteering and community service (that wasn’t
court ordered). I mean, life is hard enough as it is without having to worry about
taking care of people I’m not related to. It’s all I can do sometimes to keep me
and mine’s heads above water. Right?
Then I started looking around at my life. How many times do I go buy a fancy coffee
on a whim because I just wanted one, how many times do I hop in my car and go
for an impromptu road trip because I’m bored, how many pairs of those ridiculously
expensive Adidas pants do my kids even own? We’re not struggling over here.

So, I think that maybe it’s true that I can spare a few bucks, but I don’t have
enough time to help others as I scroll through Facebook and play with my
bellybutton. As I Netflix binge and simultaneously play games on my phone. As
I curl up with a paperback (actually, that one’s pretty sacred). Nope, no time for
helping.
The truth is we all have it better than someone else. We all have room to give in
our lives. And so many less fortunate than I are giving far more than I am willing
to give. The universe is intent on putting this in my face. From the outrageous
display of volunteers and charitable givers across the world in the wake of the
hurricanes, to the way the people of Tybee gave to the Coast Guard during the
government shutdown, it’s undeniable—people are beautiful.
Don’t give back because it’s the right thing to do, don’t give back because some
preacher in church told you, don’t give back because it will help other people.
Give back because it will help you. Because it will change something inside
of you. Because it will teach you to be grateful for what you already possess.
Because it will help you grow as a person.
Give back because it will inspire others to give back. It can start an avalanche
of giving and before you know it, you will be responsible for helping to create a
flourishing community. One that is united in a common purpose. One that will
help to alleviate the suffering and struggling of others. That sounds like the kind
of place I would like to live in and that’s the kind of place we can live in if we’re
willing to look beyond our own walls and find a way to lift up other people.
