THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN PRESERVING
COMMUNITY, COMMERCE & CULTURE!!!!
This month’s article is dedicated to those that dedicate themselves to doing good
deeds voluntarily. According to dictionary.com, the definition of volunteer is: (n) -
person who voluntarily offers himself or herself for a service or undertaking,
person who performs a service willingly and without pay; (adj) - of, relating to, or
being a volunteer or volunteers; (v, without object) – to offer oneself for some service
or undertaking, to enter service or enlist as a volunteer; (v, with object) – to offer
(oneself or one’s services) for some undertaking or purpose, to give, bestow, or
perform voluntarily.
Before I began working for the city, I helped with a local fundraiser and witnessed the
volunteer spirit of residents. That was a strong draw for me to want to be even more
of the community. Since I have been here, I have witnessed even more services that
people do because they are willing and care about where they live and those that live
here. I am honored to have the privilege to work with a variety of organizations and
indivduals on the island that do good deeds. I had the opportunity to work with all the
city appointed committees my first year working for the city. Then, my involvement
with community groups flouished when city officials confirmed the city’s dedication
to sustaining a robust year-round economy thru historic preservation when they
committed to the Main Street Program! This step provided for balance of promotions,
preservation and vibrant businesses with outreach efforts and partnerships that I’ve
been honored to be part of. There are partnerships throughout the island, throughout
the year, among at least seventeen non-profit and civic organizations! When the city
activated their Development Authority with the Program, these groups were able
to have a dedicated line to communicate and coordinate together. This attitude of
working together has gone a long way over the years – clean-ups/plantings, murals/
street parties, providing assistance, & more! I know. I know. These volunteers do
more than any of you know. How fabulous is that? Thank you again, not just for the
opps to be part of a willing and caring envirnoment, but for seeing teamwork best
practices in action for the livelihood of a community.
Tybee is authentic by design and that sets this island apart from Anywhere,
USA. For more information about what Main Street means and does with the city
and partners, visit www.tybeeislandmainstreet.com. Plus, remember that you can
stay informed about approved events, historic preservation, and community and
business matters with the Main Street Talk e-newsletter. A link is on the website and

As always, feel free to contact members of the Development Authority/Main
Street Board of Directors: Sarah Bernzott, Marianne Bramble, Angela Caldwell, Vicki
Hammons, Julie Livingston, Ted Lynch, Melissa Memory, and Kelly Swope or me
