Three Basic Types of Eye Wash and Drench Systems
As every workplace is unique, each organization and facility should be evaluated to determine the types of hazards present, as well as the most suitable
combination of eye wash units to install. The chart below will help employers choose the appropriate units to protect their workers in an emergency.

Portable eye wash used to support

for immediate care. Provides less
than the required 15 minutes of
flushing until the victim can be
moved to an eye wash station. May
be bottled or attached to a sink.
Recommended to be placed in
immediate vicinity of potentially
hazardous material.
Should be inspected and maintained
according to manufacturer’s
instructions. Bottle should be
disposed of once opened to prevent
cross contamination.

Showers
Water column between 82 and 96
inches capable of delivering flushing
fluid at 20 gallons per minute for a
minimum of 15 minutes. Enclosures,
if used, require minimum 34 inches
unobstructed diameter.

Activated weekly to flush lines and
verify operation. Inspected annually.
Connected to a supply of tepid
flushing fluid.
Personal Eye Wash
A • Portable Eye and Skin Irrigating Station
Quick, effective treatment to help reduce eye and skin damage from acid, alkali,
or other hazardous materials. Holds three replaceable 16-oz. bottles of Buffered
Flushing Solution. Provides immediate care until injured worker can be moved to
a centrally located eye wash station.
