The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that eye injuries amount to almost $1 billion per year. According to Prevent
Blindness America, the nation’s leading volunteer eye health and safety organization, in 2002 more than 97,000
people were treated at U.S. hospital emergency rooms for work-related eye injuries. Of these, 10 to 20 percent
experienced a disability because of temporary or permanent vision loss. Based on a Bureau survey, three out of five
workers who suffered eye injuries had not been wearing eye protection. Of those, 40 percent wore the wrong kind.
Ninety percent of these injuries, however, can be prevented if employers adhere and comply with safety standards
and guidelines issued by OSHA and ANSI.
