Each year, falls consistently account for the greatest number of work-related
fatalities due to factors including unstable working surfaces, misuse of fall
protection equipment, and human error. Studies have shown that the use of
protective devices, such as fall arrest systems, can prevent many deaths and
injuries from falls.
OSHA requires that employers protect workers who are at a height of six feet
or more. Fall protection systems may include any of the following:
Full-body Harnesses – These wrap around the waist, shoulders, and legs.
A D-ring located in the center of the back provides a connecting point for
lanyards and other connective devices. The harness distributes the force of
impact throughout the trunk of the body in the event of a fall.
Lanyards – These may either be used to restrain workers in position, or to
arrest falls. Fall-protection lanyards often have a shock-absorbing feature to
reduce potential fall arrest force.
Lifelines – These allow workers to move along the length of a line, rather
than disconnecting and re-tying repeatedly. A retractable feature automatically
retracts any slack between the worker and tie-off point.
Cross-arm Straps – These are used at a tie-off point, such as an I-beam,
to allow direct attachment. The strap ensures a lanyard does not become
abraded from wrapping.
NOTE: OSHA regulations require any equipment exposed to a fall be
taken out of service.
