We came together on Saturday, June 8, at the American Legion to say farewell
to our dear sweet friend, neighbor, father, Tybee resident and overall genuinely
good man, Mark Weaver.
Mark was a big part of my life and “hood” for several years. This tight knit
group of neighbors, Mark, Joy, Russ, and myself, traveled together, partied, felt
loss and new life, tears and laughter, and lots and lots of food and alcohol.
We weren’t blood, but we should have been. We were all there for each other,
especially Mark, who always had quarters for laundry, that cup of milk you
forgot, shots of Fireball and anything else a neighbor can be in want of.
Mark was always the first one I went to when I needed help: from volunteering
to selling beer and shirts for Pirates Fest and Mardi Gras, to delivering
magazines for the Beachcomber, unless of course, any of the above interfered
with the Atlanta Braves or the Atlanta Falcons playing. He wasn’t moving from
the television and that was the end of the conversation!
Mark loved his retirement and had made Tybee his retirement destination.
After serving in the Army and following that with 31 years of law enforcement,
Mark was ready to spend his leisure years with his toes in the sand and/or his
ass in his recliner. He also loved collecting old postcards of Tybee and would sit
and explain Tybee history to anyone that cared to listen.
Mark meant different things to different people. “Hood” member Joy, who
was the closest to him, remembers when he made her walk on the inside of the
sidewalk because that was the kind of protective gentleman he was. He was
also on call to change a light bulb, plunge a toilet, or anything else you may
need.
It is going to be hard for all of us not having Mark in our lives anymore, but
we all have our own personal, wonderful memories of him. When we lose a
good friend like Mark, it makes us realize how valuable our friendships are –
especially here on Tybee, because we are a small unit of people and Tybee is
family. So, cherish your friends and let’s all remember our good times with Mark.
