My my my, it’s already July. Half the year is behind us and just a few
more weeks of the summer season. Honestly, I have been waiting on
Labor Day since Memorial Day weekend. It has been a heck of a busy
season, or I’m just old and tired, or the combination of the two.
So as a reminder of how we do things at Breezy, I must explain about
dispatch. It can be the most trying job I have ever done. It isn’t just
answering the phone and sending a car all willy-nilly. There is a lot of
coordinating going on behind the scenes. You may or may not have
noticed, but our vehicles are usually on the move, either dropping people
off or on our way to get them. Dont be offended if you see a car rolling by
and you try to flag us down. That is not going to happen 49 times out of
50. Flag downs are almost always going to bite you in the ass.
If you are at a place of business we don’t need the addresses, such has
Hotel Tybee, Huc-A-Poos, The Crab Shack, etc. Honestly I do not know
any of these addresses, however I do know where they are. I do need the
address if I am picking you up from wherever you are staying. Between
9th and 10th on 2nd is not good enough. I want the number on the house.
If you tell me 908 Second Avenue, I know exactly where you are.
We always need to know how many people are riding with us and what
direction you need to go. We pick multiple people up at the same time
when it is convenient. It saves us time and helps us keep up with the
pace. The most annoying question is how long. It normally is a 10 to 20
minute wait. The wait time gets longer when we arrive to pick you up and
give you the courtesy of a phone call to let you know we are there. You
not answering our courtesy call adds to every other person’s wait time.
Make sure your ringer is turned up on your phone and pay attention.
Please! If we tell you about 20 minutes, don’t call back in 21 minutes. If
we are not there in 30 minutes, by all means call us back.
Whenever we have fireworks, we always have people that want to wait
until the very last minute to try and get to the south end of the beach. In
years past we have pretty much gotten everyone to the beach in time for
the show. I have a feeling this year is going to be different. I have it on
strong authority that this 4th of July is going to have the same horrible
traffic set up as we had this past Orange Crush. Fair warning, I do not sit
in traffic. We will know early enough in the day how things are going to
be. If traffic is backed up all the way to Wilmington from the south end
of Tybee, and Butler is the only road I’m able to use, we will shut it down
for the night.
Hopefully I am wrong on my prediction. Everyone have a wonderful July.
Go Breezy!
