W e congratulate our hunter pace champions and are pleased to see some new folks
among the winners. Winners of the Open division Roland Stearns and Virginia Martin
trophies, for a second year in a row, were the fierce family competitors Valeria Carou -Jones,
riding with her sons, William & Oliver Jones. The Novice WHH pace champion was Billie Hissam;
while Sasha Jackson won the Virginia Martin novice championship. A new gung-ho team of
Anna Dayan and Ashley Kraus swept both the WHH and Virginia Martin hilltopping championships.
The Kennels saw unusual repairs required to fix fallen gutters, rotted roof joists, a leaking
roof, and repairs to ceiling tiles and wet sheetrock inside the house, which totaled close to
$10,000, which has impacted our cash flow. Although our hunt ball and dressage shows exceeded
their income targets, our hunter paces, were not as well attended and were $6,000
under their income target. Hound vet bills were high at $4,200. We also refinanced our mortgage
at a more favorable interest rate of 5.75% with a private investor.
The Hunt now has a new 2019 fundraiser–a trail run called the Fox Chase Trail Race–which will
offer a 5k and 10k run through our Vernon territory on October 5, 2019. We are working with
Obstacle Racers of Orange County (OROC) to put this event on and we encourage you to let
your cross country running friends know about this new, fun race.
L ater this year, WHH will be hosting a viewing party to watch our TV star hounds who
were filmed for a faux boar hunt on HBO’s 2nd season of “Succession.” This was an unexpected,
one-time fundraiser for 2019. Many thanks to Shayne Haysom who noticed the request
for hounds on Facebook and for Chris Burrowswood, Dale Haysom, Lindie Scorsone, and
Jane Wiley who trekked to Long Island for two days of shooting in February.
The joint masters are continuing to work on finding more territory and expanding the borders
of existing territory. We need you to continue to support our events by volunteering, participating
and recruiting more members so that we can preserve our fox hunting legacy for you
and your children.
We want to extend a thank you to our huntsman Chris Burrowswood and his wife Joann. We had
a good season in no small measure because of their efforts. Chris and Joann have done an
exemplary job caring for our hounds and horses once again this year and we are proud and
L grateful they are with us.
astly, we want to thank our members and especially our whippers -in. Their continued
support at fund raising events and volunteering with hounds is appreciated. Watching
how the whips navigate the hunt field, and work as a team with the Huntsman and our pack and
is something to behold! There is truly nothing like fox hunting. We are blessed to be able to do
it and with a lot of effort and some luck we will continue to enjoy our sport for years to come.
