2018-2019 Season
Huntsman’s Report
Season Highlights
Although our 2018-2019 hunting season was unusually short due to excessive rains, our
hounds proved their worth and gave us some good runs to remember. Here are the highlights
from the season:
Westtown, 9/15/18
A misty morning saw a select few meet at Coal Tree Farm. As the mist lifted, a moment
was spent on reflection for the recent passing of WHH good friend and Sussex farmer,
Doug Ricker. Hounds drew at the briars in the England covert and moved on through to Wales,
finding in the Highlands, tail hounds being harked-on to the cry of the lead hounds. Soon they
were in full cry over the Brazil trail and the tractor track onto the Ridge. Swinging right handed,
they held a good line below the birches with grand music coming from the Ravine, they
pushed on over Scheffler’s Road above Pat’s House, without checking.
Once over the road they upped the pace and took a straight line over the hill crossing the
banks in the open at Tally Ho. Keeping to the cover they worked a patchy line parallel to Cosh
Road only to come to a bad check above Lower Road after running 2.5 miles in 20 minutes.
Hounds were gathered up and hacked back over Tally Ho to draw the small corn field off
Scheffler’s Road. As hounds entered cover a fox was viewed away by Shayne Haysom. Hounds
crossed into the big corn field off Battle Boro. Two coyotes crossed Cosh Road with three
couple close behind. The main pack had circled the corn and were close behind another. Forcing
him away over Scheffler’s Road, The heat of the day was beginning to tell as they hunted a
steady line on the ridge above McMullen, but made their way back to the farm on a very poor
line. I decided to gather in at the end of McMullen lane after a hunt of over 4 miles run in 35
minutes.
Vernon, 9/22/18
A slow start from the home covert, a coyote was viewed but slipped away and hounds
never really settled and couldn’t hunt him away. Drawing on, following the Wawayanda
River, hounds touched his old line on a couple of occasions but never took it up. Finally, they
put him up in the wet marsh of the old Borderland dam.
Sticking tight in cover he ran close with several deer before breaking. Hounds screamed out
crossing through the Enchanted Forest and Witches Wood. Crossing the Wawayanda, they
turned to run the woods at Quiet Creek all the way to pony club camp. Now in top gear and
grand voice they followed the south side of the river, crossing again at the deep pool 1/4 mile
downstream, only to re-cross at the tractor ford. They climbed over the hill to run in the open
hay field banks, cutting back down to the gallop track and into the thick cover of the first
draw. Not dwelling here, they pushed him out to run over the power line to break at and cross
the hay field down to Dekay Road.
He was viewed over by Joann Burrowswood, but hounds checked on the road and couldn’t
