The Name
When Praying Pelican Missions was established in 2003, our founders
desired to give us a name that was both unique and memorable. PPM
began with our first local church partner in the country of Belize. If
you’ve been to Belize, you know that pelicans can be found everywhere.
Pelican imagery is woven throughout the church in Central America as
well, most often found carved or painted on altars and pulpits.
Additionally, there is an old legend that says in times of scarcity and
famine, mother pelicans will tear pieces of their own flesh in order to
feed their children. This act represents the sacrifice that Jesus made
for all of mankind on the cross, as well as the self-sacrificial service and
giving we’re called to as His followers. With this in mind, our goal is to
serve in a sacrificial way, giving of ourselves in order to benefit others, all
in the name of Christ--and our name encompasses this goal.
