CARLOS
By Joey Goralczyk
It’s certainly not unheard of for us to pick someone up from the police
station. More often than not, if you’ve made it there in the first place, you
aren’t in any condition to be walking away. Breezy is mostly judgement
free, so don’t feel bad if you need to call once you’ve attained your freedom.
What’s better than a friendly face to help you flee a memory you wanna
forget until your court date? As a matter of fact, there is a good chance
that TIPD will call us for you. It just occurred on New Year’s night, come to
think of it.
It was a fairly quiet evening. The Bulldogs were playing in their bowl
game so everyone was kind of idle until it ended. I received a call from
TIPD. As I went to answer, I couldn’t help but wonder what fresh hell I was
about to get involved in. I appreciate all that our wonderful police force
do for us, but never care to speak with them. Tends to end badly for me.
The voice on the other end was friendly enough though. She politely said,
“We just got a call from someone who said you could come get Carlos. We
picked him up earlier, but we are ready to let him go home.” I racked my
brain to think if I knew a Carlos.
“Okay??? Do I need to bring bail?” I asked.
“No. We just have him behind the counter right now. If he stays overnight
we are supposed to take him to county, and we don’t want to do that,” she
replied. This was just not clicking in my mind. Maybe I was sleep deprived,
but I was confused.
“Okay? So I’m just coming to pick him up. Cool. Does he have cash for
the ride?”
“Well, no Joey. He’s a dog”
“OH! Well this makes much more sense now! I know him. I’m on my
way,” I said. My fog of confusion lifted. Almost immediately after I hung up,
I got another call. This time the voice was panicked sounding.
“Joey? Thank goodness it’s you. I got a weird problem and really need
your help.”
“Let me guess, does it involve a dog?”
“Yeah, it does. How did you know?” Call it a hunch.
I got there shortly afterward. Carlos was so happy to see me. I’ve been in
that position, so I get it Dawg. We worked out the formalities and I signed
the little jailbird out. She asked me if we did this often. Not for my fourlegged
friends, but this was not my first rodeo here. Of course, who walked
him out to me? The same wonderful officer who walked me out last time I
was back there. And he had the biggest smile on his face you’ve ever seen.
Better to be on this side of it, for sure. Happy New Year officer! Carlos, let’s
roll. I got him home. He licked my face as he left the backseat and went
upstairs.
Let’s just hope that neither one of us are repeat offenders this year.
