high-density area, centered around community hubs with
walkable conveniences, was born.
Now that many of us are staying closer to home (and
we may have even become full-fledged homebodies!),
having amenities within a walkable distance of our homes
has become even more important to our lifestyle.
This vision has been realized with the completion of
the Central Parc Shoppes in Bridgewater — located
adjacent to Keene's Crossing Elementary School and
Orange County's Summerport Park. Summerport area
residents can now easily access learning, recreation
and shopping all by foot or bike – leaving the car in the
garage more often.
The same will be true for the residents in Lakeside
Village, with the amenities adjacent to Castleview
Elementary, including the Lakeside Neighborhood
Shoppes and the future completion of Taborfield Park.
Each Horizon West village has been designed to
include space for up to four elementary schools as well
as two middle schools, and one high school for every
two villages. This kind of detailed forethought is what
makes our community so special.
As HW development progresses, neighborhood centers
will continue to be completed and will work hand-in-hand
with the also-developing village centers to connect residents
to shared services. Residents will enjoy the lifestyle
of convenient access and local small businesses will find
places to grow and thrive in their own community.
Living here, we have firsthand experience of how
massive area development takes time. Economic
downturns back in 2007 and now a global pandemic
have also impacted the pace of construction. Even
without those economic influcences, bringing to life a
master plan of urbanism of this scale is still a herculean
process. Growing pains are to be expected in such a
dynamic area that is in its "teen years" as of 2021.
As we continue see new homes and new buildings
at nearly every turn, it's truly remarkable to see how
quickly this area has grown and how these neighborhood
centers bring us together.

It's understandable for new arrivals and even established residents
to feel a bit overwhelmed when exploring the dozens of
neighborhoods, which blend into larger villages that make up
the Horizon West area. Nestled among natural lakes, oak-lined
streets and paved bike paths, this community spans over 32
square miles on the west side of Orange County, Florida.
Nonetheless, when you break it down to a microlocal level, it's
easy to discover the framework of a master plan that redefines
the model coined as New Urbanism. Based on design influences
from the early 20th century with front porches, rear garages and
community-centric amenities, these neighborhoods have been
developed for more than aesthetics, but also purpose.
A big part of the design are the emerging micro-clusters of "neighborhood
centers," typically including an elementary school, public
park and commercial space, which are part of the plan that brings
families together to create a stronger sense of community.
Interestingly, the Horizon West area wasn"t always the cluster of
cohesive communities that it is today. Developed from miles of
orange groves devastated by freezes in the 1980s, a plan for a
