MASSAGE AFTER
TREATMENT OF
CANCER
By Deborah Karlan, L.M.T.
S cientific studies have shown that
massage is effective in reducing
stress, pain, anxiety, depression,
nausea, scar tissue and fatigue in people
who have had chemotherapy, radiation, or
surgery for cancer. Gentle manual lymphatic
therapy with gentle myofascial release may
be very productive in healing the scar tissue
caused by radiation and helps to mobilize
the tissue.
I recently treated William, a 60-yearold
who was diagnosed with Stage 3 HPV
cancer that started on the back of his tongue,
spread to his right neck lymph nodes and
formed a mass on his right neck. His sevenweek
cancer treatment with 35 radiation
treatments and seven chemo treatments
eliminated the cancer and the mass. But he
had hardened tissue along the right neck
and nerve damage in the neck and shoulder.
He had a limited range of motion of the
neck and right arm. The left shoulder was
elevated. So I used a combination of manual
lymphatic drainage, gentle myofascial
release and E-Stim with excellent results. I
did massage on the face and inside the jaw,
on the back, the neck, shoulders and arms
with excellent results. After nine treatments,
the skin has softened and gone from painful
to mildly sensitive. The muscles of the
neck, back and shoulders have full range
of motion.
Depending on the type of cancer and the
therapy, the doctor may approve massage
to relieve stress and improve treatment
outcome.
