ham, salami and Swiss cheese,
served with sweet mustard and
pickles. Another platter had roast
pork, smoked ham and sausages
on sauerkraut with a parsley

What Went Wrong
In his well-researched book, The Swamp
Peddlers, Jason Vuic tells the tales of land
development in the state of Florida from
the 1920s to the present, highlighting
how greed and poor planning created
problems with home site sales that went
far beyond the question of whether it
was swamp land or not. Lessons have
been learned, and there is hope for the
future in new developments such as
Babcock Ranch with its “New Urbanist”
community design in Charlotte County.
The book covers the dark side of real
estate development that should have
been made known decades ago. Copies
of the book, published by The University
of North Carolina Press, are available at
uncpress.org, amazon.com and from other
booksellers.
