DOWNTOWN
RENAISSANCE
The enthusiasm for hip, urban
living close to all of the amenities
– restaurants, pubs, galleries and
museums – has created a surge of
exciting development downtown,
starting near the waterfront and
spreading out to the Grand
Central District. New apartments,
townhomes and luxury condo
towers are going up and selling
out quickly. The inux of residents
has paved the way for new
restaurants, shops and services.
A new Publix grocery store has
recently opened to cater to the
demand.
PRESERVING THE
CITY’S HISTORY
New development means
progress, but there’s also
tremendous pride in the city’s
many historic homes and
neighborhoods. Residents are
passionate about keeping St.
Pete “special” and “preserving”
the ‘Burg. The St. Petersburg
Preservation Society offers
walking and bicycle tours
of many of the city’s unique
neighborhoods, as well as
downtown’s landmark treasures
from the 1920s, such as the open
air post ofce, Snell Arcade,
Detroit Hotel, The Coliseum and
Vinoy Renaissance Hotel.
LANDMARK
NEIGHBORHOODS
St. Petersburg has a unique
number of landmark neighborhoods
that are rich in history and
architectural style charm. One of
the nation’s premier examples of
Craftsman Bungalow homes can
be found in Kenwood, a designated
historic district and “artist
enclave,” which allows the many
artists living there to teach classes
and sell artwork from their homes.
Cade Allen homes from the 20s,
30s, and 40s, featuring marble,
granite and coquina rock for
exterior siding can be found in Allendale,
another historic neighborhood
noted for its enormous oak
trees and winding red brick streets.
Additional historic communities
include Crescent Lake, Woodlawn
and the historic Old Northeast,
a premier St. Petersburg address
close to the downtown waterfront.
The Old Northeast is listed on
the National Register of Historic
Places and features colored
hexagonal block sidewalks and
beautifully restored older homes
in a mix of styles from the 1920s
through present day.
WATERFRONT HOMES
With several hundred miles of
shoreline along Tampa Bay, St.
Petersburg has a wealth of waterfront
properties that offer great
views and easy access to water
for boating, sailing and kayaking.
South of downtown, neighborhoods
such as the old Southeast,
Bahama Shores, Pinellas Point and
the Skyway Marina District offer an
eclectic mix of homes, apartments
and condos. North of downtown
are the communities of Shore
Acres, Venetian Isles, Riviera Bay
and Snell Isle, an upscale neighborhood
with many waterfront
estates and historic mansions.
