Engage Your Future and Community:
ACM Receives Carnegie Classification
In February 2020, the
Carnegie Foundation
announced that Allegany
College of Maryland is one of the
119 U.S. colleges and universities
to receive the Carnegie Community
Engagement Classification, an
elective designation that indicates
institutional commitment to
community engagement.
This important classification
is awarded following a process
of self-study by each institution,
which is then assessed by a
national review committee led
by the Swearer Center for Public
Engagement at Brown University,
the administrative and research
home for the Carnegie Community
Engagement Classification.
Allegany College of Maryland
is one of only two Maryland
community colleges
to receive the
classification.
Six colleges in
Maryland have
2020 or 2015
Carnegie
Community
Engagement
Classifications:
Allegany
College of
Maryland
(2020), Loyola
University
Maryland (2020),
Salisbury University
(2020), University of Maryland
Baltimore County (2020), Anne
Arundel Community College (2015)
and Towson University (2015).
The Carnegie Community
Engagement Classification
has been the leading
framework for
institutional
assessment and
recognition of
community
engagement
in U.S. higher
education
for the past
14 years
with multiple
classification
cycles in 2006,
2008, 2010, 2015,
and 2020.
“
What is community
engagement?
According to the Swearer
Center for Public Engagement,
“Community engagement describes
collaboration between institutions
of higher education and their larger
communities (local, regional/state,
national, global) for the mutually
beneficial exchange of knowledge and
resources in a context of partnership
and reciprocity.”
Its purpose is to enrich scholarship,
research and creative activity;
enhance curriculum, teaching and
learning; prepare educated, engaged
citizens; strengthen democratic values
and civic responsibility; address
critical societal issues; and contribute
to the public good.
