our students, having grown up
in Cumberland and witnessed
the college’s impact on our
community.
After Silver Spring, I continued
to St. Mary’s County and my
“home away from home” in
Southern Maryland – the Holiday
Inn Express in Lexington Park-
California. The staff know me,
especially the lady who manages
the breakfast bar who often
asks advice for her son who is
considering college. The hotel,
decorated for the holidays, was
quiet as I set up a temporary
office in my hotel room.
This morning, however, I
head to Calvert High School and
Patuxent High Schools in Calvert
County where I enter through
security and metal detectors like
I do in most high schools. I focus
on building relationships with the
school guidance or college and
career counselors. While each
school is different, but it’s often
these counselors who set the
tone for the students for their
lives post-high school. In some
schools, these offices are hubs
of activity for older students,
and you see the investment
the school is making in their
graduates.
My next stop leads me to
Great Mills High School in St.
Mary’s, where I meet with two
female students interested in
our business and criminal justice
majors as well as our Lady
Trojans basketball team, and
the school’s college and career
counselor. I then make my way
to Chopticon High School for
my final visit of the day where I
meet with a male student who
is interested in our forestry
program. He and I met during
one of my larger presentations
at the Dr. James A. Forrest
Career & Technology Center last
fall. Today we speak for forty
minutes about ACM’s application
process and course offerings.
After checking back in with the
college and career counselor, I
head back to my hotel to check
in with a phone call to my boss,
Sue, before catching up on my
office duties and following up
with prospective students.
Just another day in the books
for an ACM recruiter. Go Trojans!
