A Day in the Life of a College Recruiter
13 ACCESS ACM / Building Futures
As a recruiter, I look forward to having
great conversations and interactions with
prospective ACM students. Each day is
new and exciting. I love when students I’ve
met during trips or tours check in with me
as ACM students in their first or second
semester. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a
small part of their journey.” -Lauren Winterberg

Yesterday, a Monday, was
a travel day for me. Ten
minutes after sunrise, I
drove our “billboard on wheels,”
a wrapped Toyota Camry, east for
four days of recruitment visits in
Southern Maryland.
Billboard was packed with
everything I could possibly need for
the next several days: an enclosed
rolling cart filled with program
materials, a laptop and half of
my office, my calendar, snacks, a
cooler of bottled water, a lint roller,
luggage, too many pairs of shoes,
and mints. Always mints.
As one of two traveling recruiters
at ACM, my territory covers
Garrett, Allegany, Frederick, Calvert,
Charles, St. Mary’s, and part of
Montgomery Counties in Maryland
as well as two schools in Somerset
County, Pennsylvania. For
prospective students, I’m often the
first face of ACM they encounter.
Carpool karaoke may or may
not have been part of my drive
before I stopped in Silver Spring. I
unloaded my folders, calendar,
and cart of materials (which in all
honesty is about as tall as me)
before I headed into Northwood
High School. It’s a large school
with a diverse population.
It’s a place where I hear the
same question that I hear at
other schools in Maryland and
Pennsylvania: Why would I consider
going to ACM versus my local
community college?
That’s when I launch into my
Top 5 Reasons to Choose ACM.
Truth be told, I didn’t attend
Allegany College of Maryland.
I went to Allegheny College in
Pennsylvania, a fact that leads
to interesting conversations and
much confusion during tours. But
I’m passionate about ACM and
